  1. Best Practices in Improving School Climate:

This strand will focus on current research and best practices in improving and maintaining positive School Climate. Students are more likely to be successful when they are in a school Climate and Culture in which they feel supported, safe, challenged and accepted. Presenters and breakouts will look at school-wide approaches to individual classrooms and will focus on skills and practices that participants can implement as soon as they leave the Summit.

 

Topics will include: best practices regarding student behavior, being successful with challenging students, school climate simplified, restorative practices, Co-creating the school environment, students at the center of all decisions, Incorporating reflection to stimulate learning and action, celebration of diversity within the school community, creating the leaders of today, and conditions for learning

 


  1. Multi-Tiered System of Supports
  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework used to guide the implementation of an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. The integrated instruction and intervention is delivered to students in varying intensities (multiple tiers) based on student need. This strand will focus on a systematic approach to improving School Climate and Culture.

 

Topics will include: Data based decision making, Strengthening Tier 1, Tier 2 teaming, intense intervention for results, Professional learning communities, function and need based interventions, progress monitoring, and 4-step problem solving process.


 

  1. Cultural Proficiency
  • Cultural Proficiency is the way a person or organization effectively engages with and plans for issues that arise in diverse environments. It is a paradigm shift from viewing cultural differences as problematic to learning how to interact effectively with other cultures. Cultural Proficiency focuses on learning about oneself and recognizing how one’s culture and identity may affect others.

 

Topics will include: self-assessments, dominate culture, implicit bias, deficit conception, racial identity, social justice leadership, identifying and eliminating barriers, culturally responsive expectations, meaningful participation, oppression in schools systems, and culturally responsive interventions.


  1. Social, Emotional and Physical Health
  • Social, emotional and physical health of students is more than simply the absence of illness; it includes the possession of skills necessary to handle life’s challenges. As school professionals, we are concerned about the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of our students. Healthy learners are less likely to engage in problem behaviors that interfere with learning and schools are the ideal place to cultivate and foster resiliency in all students.

 

Topics will include: student safety, mental health, bullying, student advocacy, k-12 counseling, trauma informed care, core mental health instruction, demonstrating caring, relationship building, healthy learning environments, moral development, brain development,  resiliency and school based therapy


  1. Stakeholder Engagement
  • Stakeholder engagement is collaboration between families, community and educators that accelerates student learning. This strand will focus on areas of stakeholder engagement such as; establishing trust, building relationships, and partnering with families to support children’s academic progress. This includes empowering stakeholders to set high expectations, monitor performance and hold children accountable, support learning at home, guide children’s education, and advocate for them.

 

Topics include: community in schools, family engagement, community partnerships, parent advocacy, before and after school care, building community, family networks, community action planning, families in leadership roles, career pathways, volunteer opportunities, and stakeholder empowerment.


  1. Leadership

–      Effective leadership is essential to building and creating positive school climate and culture. Leaders in all capacities, classroom, building, district and governmental, pay important roles in fostering a school climate and culture that yields positive outcomes for students. This strand will focus on building the leadership capacity of attendees at all levels of an organization by introducing and building upon essential leadership skills.

Topics will include: Effective leadership, coaching for results, 1st and 2nd order change, crisis management, managing stress, working in teams, professional learning communities, effective communication, handling conflict, human capital, school-wide strategies, collaborative problem solving, data decision making, cultural advocacy organizations, and strategic decision making.
